A handheld infrared temperature sensor is an easy way to test the surface temperature of the feedstock barrel.

Step 4: Remove the combustor and quench the biochar

Once the flames have extinguished, put on welding gloves and remove the combustor, setting it aside on the ground. When you see a tiny amount of grayish white ash forming on the edges of the biochar, immediately pick up the feedstock barrel (again, using welding gloves) and dump the biochar into the quenching barrel. If the biochar is not quenched, it will continue burning and eventually burn completely to white ash.

Set the hot feedstock barrel aside. Immediately soak the biochar with water from a garden hose. Stand on the upwind side when you quench the biochar because enormous amounts of steam will billow up. Completely flood all of the biochar. The quench barrel can be left in place on the ground to drain the excess water away.
